Summer Safety Guide: Pool Safety, Heat Illness, Bug Bites & Sunscreen

Keep your kids safe this summer. Expert tips on pool safety, sun protection, heat illness prevention, and bug bite treatment from American Pediatrics.

Southern California summers mean pool days, beach trips, and outdoor adventures — but they also bring specific safety risks for children. Here's how to keep your kids safe while they enjoy the sunshine.

Pool and Water Safety

Drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1–4. Never leave children unattended near water, even for a moment. Designate a "water watcher" at pool parties. Enroll children in swim lessons starting at age 1. Ensure pools have proper fencing with self-closing gates.

Sun Protection

Children's skin burns faster than adults'. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, applied 15 minutes before going outside and reapplied every 2 hours. For babies under 6 months, avoid direct sun and use protective clothing and shade instead of sunscreen. Don't forget ears, back of neck, and tops of feet.

Heat Illness Prevention

Children overheat faster than adults. Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, and dizziness. Heat stroke is a medical emergency — look for hot dry skin, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Keep children hydrated, take breaks in shade, and never leave a child in a parked car, even for a minute.

Bug Bites and Stings

Use DEET-based repellent (10–30%) for children over 2 months. For bee stings, remove the stinger by scraping (not squeezing), apply ice, and give age-appropriate antihistamine if needed. Seek emergency care if your child shows signs of allergic reaction: swelling beyond the sting site, difficulty breathing, hives, or dizziness.
