Managing Your Child's Asthma: Triggers, Treatment, and Action Plans
A comprehensive guide to childhood asthma management including triggers, medications, and action plans from the pediatricians at American Pediatrics.
Asthma is the most common chronic condition in children, affecting approximately 1 in 12 kids in the United States. With proper management, children with asthma can lead fully active, healthy lives.
Recognizing Asthma Symptoms
Common signs include wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing), persistent coughing (especially at night or early morning), shortness of breath during activity, chest tightness, and frequent respiratory infections. Some children only have symptoms during exercise or when exposed to specific triggers.
Common Triggers in Southern California
Pollen and air quality are significant triggers in our region. Other common triggers include dust mites, pet dander, mold, cold air, exercise, respiratory infections, smoke exposure, and strong odors. Identifying your child's specific triggers is the first step in effective management.
Treatment Approach
Asthma medications fall into two categories: quick-relief (rescue inhalers like albuterol for immediate symptom relief) and long-term control (daily medications like inhaled corticosteroids that prevent symptoms). Your pediatrician will determine the right combination based on your child's severity.
The Asthma Action Plan
Every child with asthma should have a written action plan developed with their pediatrician. This plan uses a green-yellow-red zone system: green means symptoms are well-controlled, yellow means symptoms are increasing and medications need adjustment, and red means a medical emergency. Share this plan with your child's school and caregivers.
When to Seek Emergency Care
Call 911 or go to the ER if your child's rescue inhaler isn't helping, they're having severe difficulty breathing, their lips or fingernails turn blue, they can't speak in full sentences, or their chest is pulling in with each breath.
At American Pediatrics, we provide comprehensive asthma management including diagnosis, personalized action plans, medication adjustments, and referrals to pediatric pulmonologists when needed.
